DOORS EVER OPEN by STAN GRAHAM

DOORS EVER OPEN

LITTLE BROWN SUITCASE AND SAD LITTLE CHILD’S FACE,
LOOK OF BEWILDERMENT BEHIND BLUE EYES.
JUST ONE OF MANY NOT WORTH A PENNY,
NO ONE TO MISS THEM OR KISS THEM GOODBYE.

DOWN BY THE DOCKSIDE SOON TO BE LEAVING,
LIKE LITTLE TOY SOLDIERS ALL IN A ROW.
THE YOUNGER ONES CRYING THE OLDER ONES TRYING,
TO COMFORT EACH OTHER WHEN SPIRITS ARE LOW.

BRING ME THE NEEDY THE LOST AND FORGOTTEN,
THE YOUNG BOYS AND YOUNG GIRLS LEFT ALL ALONE.
HERE THEY’LL FIND SHELTER AND HOPE FOR THE FUTURE,
A DOOR EVER OPEN A PLACE TO CALL HOME.

BOUND FOR AUSTRALIA TO FIND A NEW LIFE THERE,
NOW THEY ARE OLDER WITH SKILLS OF THEIR OWN.
LEAVING ALL BEHIND THEM FOR SO MANY REASONS,
THE MOTHERS AND FATHERS THAT THEY’D NEVER KNOWN.

THEY GAME FROM THE GUTTER SO COLD AND SO LONELY,
FROM STREETS IN THE CITY FILLED WITH DESPAIR.
GIVEN A CHANCE TO MAKE SOMETHING FROM NOTHING,
THIS WAS THE LIFE OF A CHILD LEFT IN CARE.

BRING ME THE NEEDY THE LOST AND FORGOTTEN,
THE YOUNG BOYS AND YOUNG GIRLS LEFT ALL ALONE.
HERE THEY’LL FIND SHELTER AND HOPE FOR THE FUTURE,
A DOOR EVER OPEN A PLACE TO CALL HOME.

I WAS THAT CHILD THAT STARTED WITH NOTHING,
AND ALL OF SOCIETY TRIED TO DISOWN.
GIVEN A CHANCE THAT WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN,
BY DR BARNARDO WHO GAVE ME A HOME.

STAN GRAHAM.

Below are the words to the above song sent in by Victor. Please turn up volume,

In 1985 I moved to H.Q. Western District at the same time as a young Army Captain Stan Graham.
We played squash and golf together and have remained very good friends to this day. Stan has become
an accomplished singer song writer and having heard many of my stories, he wrote a song about
Dr Barnardo’s children called Doors Ever Open. He has given permission for it to be included on this
site and also to be downloaded if anyone wants it. I am sure the words in the song will resonate with
some of our readers.

Regards

Victor King
