A part of Goldings history on the right is pictured,
the Paramount Chief of Barotseland. Northern Rhodesia
as it was then. The story as I know it was that the
Governor of Goldings The Reverend F. C. MacDonald,
was a missionary to that part of Africa in his early days,
and became a good friend to the chief. So when he came
to England for the Silver Jubilee of King George V.
The Governor invited him to visit Goldings

GOLDINGS v. TV TRAVELLERS

WHAT IT is hoped may become an annual social event at Goldings took place on Saturday, I5th June, when a team of TV
personalities, the TV Travellers, journeyed to Goldings to challenge staff and boys to a one-day cricket match.
Advance publicity drew quite a number of cricket enthusiasts and, I imagine, a greater number of autograph hunters.
Both sections must have felt well rewarded, for autographs were willingly distributed and the cricket was never dull. Such is
the beautiful setting surrounding the bottom field, affording spectators an amphitheatre seating, cricket matches take on a
gladiatorial atmosphere, although the Romans would have frowned upon their 'emperor' taking refreshments to the
contestants.
The School batted first, and with 5 wickets down for 65, a high score seemed improbable. However, good scores by the
Headmaster and Gordon Ansty added to the 40 by Dr. Jory and Mr. Tordoff’s 19, took the final score to 139.
Wilbert Workman was the not out batsman and so he batted for the TV Travellers, as they were one man short.
Messrs. James and Ansty opened the bowling for the School and captured an early wicket apiece, the scoreboard reading at
that time 5 for 2. Then Christopher Trace, who we had been informed when reading the programme, had five thumbs on
each hand, demonstrate a how useful all these thumbs were by scoring 21 and, backed ably by I. Salter, stopped the rot.
However, when these two went, the remainder of the side could offer only token resistance. Workman added a valuable
contribution of 16 and will probably be offered a producer's job, provided he plays regularly for the Travellers.
It appeared that all the ladies were under the spell of Michael Aspel and he delighted them all with a great variety of strokes,
three of which caused his bat to connect with the ball.
Everyone agreed this venture was a great success, even all those 'off stage' personalities for whom the venture made so much
work.

It is hoped that the TV TRAVELLERS CRICKET XI will be chosen from the names listed below. Unfortunately, owing to
the odd hours that we all work, it is impossible to forecast the team accurately at the time of going to press.

TIM ARTRO MORRIS
Actor, dilettante and wit Well-known for his portrayal
of seedy Welshmen— No comment! Tim is a great
stayer. Watch-his bowling.
MICHAEL ASPEL
Yes, it's him. The well-known Newscaster and fluffer.
Noted for his clear clean-cut features, his alertness, his
virile athletic figure. He's no good at cricket.
BILL BARRON
A pillar of our little community, it is Bill's unfortunate
lot to ensure that actors are in the studio when they are
required— truly a Herculean task. Good cricketer.
DOUGLAS BLACKWELL
Fugitive from Bonehead's gang and currently in
'Moonstrike'. Dougie is probably the keenest cricketer
in the team.
BERNARD CR1BBINS
Actor, singer and fisherman. Heard daily on
'Housewives' Choice'. Bernie hasn't played cricket for
a long time but he should be fit, he breeds beagles.
JIMMY ELLIS
Better known as Lynch in 'Z Cars', Jimma is held in
awe by his colleagues for his masterful use of dialect—
not a bad cricketer either.
DUDLEY FOSTER
Now that's a face you have seen many times on the
telly. Poor old Dudley seems to get lumbered with the
mean parts, but don't worry, he won't bite.
TONY SERGEANT
News Film Editor with the B.B.C. With a mere snip of his
scissors he can dash your hopes of being seen on the telly
waving to Mum. Tony is a keen cricketer, but liable to
stiffness during June and July.
TONY PARKER
Actor of repute, wit and raconteur. Tony might well be
unorthodox in his batting but just you try and get him out.

DAVID HARRiSON
Assistant Editor with B.B.C. News. Recently visited Monte
Carlo to cover a sporting event—or so he says! David is a
keen sportsman and a strong cricketer.
JEREMY KEMP
Another well-known face. Now a fugitive from the law,
Jeremy has taken to the 'other Channel' as they say, but he
remains a good cricketer whatever his politics may be.
YAVA ABBAS
Affectionately known as the 'Pakistani Peril'. Yava is a
News Cameraman with the B.B.C. and is a bit of an
unknown quantity on the cricket field, he bowls a very
weird form of googlie.
BRIAN PR1NGLE
A face seen many times on both large and small screens.
Brian is another master of dialect, and has been called the
Bon Viveur of the English inn. Plays a good game at wicket.
SID ROBERTS
Cameraman and perhaps one of the better cricketers in the
side. In fact Sid adds colour to what would otherwise be a
vulgar brawl.
COLIN WHELLAND
Actor, newly promoted to the hierarchy of 'Z Cars'.
Colin is the dark horse of the side. We know that he
plays rugby, so watch out, anything may happen!
CHRISTOPHER TRACE
(Captain and general dog's-body) Currently in 'Blue Peter'
and the bane of many parents. At least this is a time when
they can get their own back, oh the cricket field he is the
one who has five thumbs on each hand.
GRAHAM VEALE
News Cameraman with the B.B.C. A great all-rounder
last year, slightly less round this year, Plays at wicket
and is well-known for his witty quips at the most
difficult moments.
