Dunes at Morfa Bychan

Sand-dunes and wetland near Porthmadog with typical wildflowers of these habitats. Part of the site is managed on a contract for Greenacres Holiday Park.

Morfa Bychan offers the chance to see rare maritime plants within a dynamic dune system. A complete range of dune habitats are present.
During the last ice age, sediment from Snowdonia was deposited in the Irish Sea. Within the north of Cardigan Bay the prevailing currents carry this sediment towards Tremadog. Continual movement of sediment has led to the development of extensive sandbars in Tremadog Bay.

The reserve is situated SW of Porthmadog. From the town centre follow the signs for Morfa Bychan along the A487 turning right. Continue along this road until you reach Porthmadog Golf Club on the left. Park in the village and walk across the golf links, past the greenkeepers shed to the stile in the NE corner of the reserve. Alternatively the reserve can be approached from the beach after parking in the car park at the end of the road to the beach. (SH 543 365).
