Distribution of Hazel Dormouse in the UK

Distribution

Dormice are located mainly in the southern United Kingdom, but do occur in scattered populations as one moves northwards, with a large population near Ruthin. Other local populations include the Chwiler Valley in Flintshire, Bontuchel in Denbighshire, Conwy and Corris. Dormice are not found in Scotland or Ireland. They are, however, found in Continental Europe.

Law

Dormice are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 as their numbers and distributional range have declined by at least half during the past 100 years. Handling or disturbing dormice is an offence unless undertaken by a trained and licensed person. Licences are granted by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) in Wales.
