Getting involved
group photo

If you would like to get involved with this project, making and placing dormice boxes, surveying for dormice, participating in dormouse nut hunts (see below) or taking part in wildlife connectivity studies please contact the North Wales Wildlife Trust on 01352 810469 or email Rhian Hughes

Are there dormice near you?

Is your cat a hunter?
We’d really like to know if your cat has brought home a dormouse lately.

If you go down to the woods today...
Take a look on the ground and if you find any dormouse chewed nuts, we’d really like to know!

To identify the signs of dormice, download the postcard (.pdf 3MB) below, and send us your records if you think you have dormice nearby.

Dormouse Nut Hunts

We need your help in finding out exactly where dormouse are present in North Wales.

As it is not easy to see dormice, the easiest way to discover new dormouse sites are by looking for their signs, such as the characteristic marks that dormice leave on hazelnuts. This allows us to determine whether the nut was opened by a dormouse or by another small mammal.

There are sites across North Wales that we think might be worth searching in, either because they are near an existing dormouse area, are in a large area of woodland or they have been suggested as possible sites. These sites are marked on the map below. Where grid references are not very specific we would welcome your hunt reports from the general area.

If you have your own local woods which you would like to survey please feel free to do this and send your results to Rhian Hughes at the Loggerheads Office.

How to go about doing a Nut Hunt
  • Choose a local wood, which has fruiting hazel trees present or choose one from the map below.
  • Approach landowner for permission (please let us know the landowner details).
  • If organising for a group, do a risk assessment. You can download a sample risk assessment here.
  • Download the Nut Hunt Guide (pdf 168k) for more information on identifying dormouse signs and how to report your findings.
  • Get nutting!!

Note: We have not visited all of these sites, so cannot guarantee their accessibility or general condition. For all woods, except Nature Reserves, you should speak to the landowner before carrying out a survey. It is also a good idea to visit the site before undertaking a survey, especially if you are surveying as a group.
