Carol,
Mr Marchant was the Bandmaster at Stepney and the band was used also to recruit for the First World War. He was asked by Dr Barnardo's to run the Band at Goldings when it opened in April 1922. They caught the train to Hertford, they laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in Hertford they then marched up the North Road to Goldings. His daughter started to court a Golding’s boy who was also at Stepney, being a Dr Barnardo boy. They got married at Golding's with a band playing in the music gallery at Goldings, which was above the Governor's office. Talking to an old member of Staff they weren't very happy with their daughter marrying a Dr Barnardo boy, but as it turned out they were happily married until they both passed away. Mr and Mrs Maslin supported the School until Mr Maslin passed away in 1965. They were both well respected by the boys, and many of the Old Boys of today weren't aware that Mr Maslin was also a Dr Barnardo Boy. His job at Goldings was the School Bursar, but he was also very popular as he gave out the pocket money on a Saturday!! Mrs Maslin did so much work for Goldings and was supporting in many ways to the boys and she was so respected. I believe Mr Marchant passed away in the 30's .I hope this helps a little in your research,
Regards Goldings Old Boys. Dave Blower-Goldings 1962-65.

My grandfather, John Marchant, was a bandmaster at Goldings in the 1920s. I understand that he walked the boys from Hertford station to the Goldings estate in 1922. Does anyone have any further information about him or where I could find this as I am trying to trace his employment record with Barnardos. I know he was at WNTC in North Elmham, Norfolk in 1911 and I think he left there to go to Stepney at some point as that's where he came from with the boys in 1922. I would also like to know when he retired from Goldings. Thanking you in anticipation. Carol Parker
