I'm quite sure you are right David and have no doubt but that it was Trent College (not far from Derby) where I went to visit Rev. Corbett. It was a one time visit and it was over 60 years ago.

Back in the days (1957) before I left England, there was a chap (MC) on TV who would introduce an entertainer who in turn was called 'The Memory Man'. The MC would ask the audience, "Ask him (the memory man) any question, any question you wish about anything, he will give you the answer." I believe one would win a small prize if he couldn't answer the question correctly.

My question to you David W. is 'what was his name?' I should mention, there may be a small prize but you will have to come here to get it.
Incidently, while I was looking to find the Rev. Corbett's letter of reference for me, I found that your father also sent me a reference at the same time which I had forgotten.
In yet another letter I received from your dad he made reference to the murder trial I was a witness in. I'm going to email you a copy. Reg

My Name is Brian William Battrick and my father Albert Battrick went to William Baker School in 1922. Dad was born in 1907 and I am his only child. Three years ago I set about writing my own story and my research took me into history my Dad had never talked about. Dad died in 1988 and I am now 75 so the project in writing my own story is for my own grandchildren to know the history of the family. I have two photographs of Dad when he was at the school, one of them shows him in the first cricket team as the wicket keeper and the other photo is of him in the football team in 1923. I also have a few of his boxing medals dated 1923, 1922, 1926, 1925, 1924and 1920. The earliest is when he was still at Epson before he was transferred to the new school. One medal has on it The Ben Fund Tournament 1926-27 when he was Centre Half.
My story took two years to put together. I have looked at your web site and find many answers to the past. I have his tools from the time he did carpentry . I found out why he needed help and found it with the school. Much of it is sad but he made it . He had a happy marriage and home, he proceeded to have a good job and saw grandchildren .
If you can help me in any way it would help me close the story of his early life.

Reg Longman - Somerset - 1947/50

Hi Dave, I too remember Betsy Corbett reasonably well. In 1956 following my having studied Construction and Building Sciences at Bristol University, I applied for a job with Simms Son and Cook (Nottingham) to supervise (with four others) the construction of a satellite village in Iran. The Iranian Oil Co. who we were building the village for, required a character reference from me, so I contacted Mr Wheatley.
Mr Wheatley suggested (because I was situated in Derby at the time)that I go and see the Rev. Corbett who was the Chaplain at Trinity College in Derbyshire (I believe).
So I drove to Trinity College and Rev. Corbett invited me to his and Betsy's home for dinner.
The Rev. Corbett gave me a glowing reference, which without it I wouldn't have gone to Iran. I still have the reference to this day. It was all a very good experience.
Many years later after I had immigrated to Canada I read in the Barnardo's Guild Messenger, that the Rev. Corbett had died and that Betsy would like to hear from anyone from Goldings who knew her. So I contacted Betsy and we corresponded for a few years.
At the time Betsy was as well, in touch with Parks, (who I believe must have been one of the best buglers Goldings ever produced). I wonder if Parks is still around?
It's quite sad to hear of Betsy's demise, she was a lovely lady. Reg
