Reg Longman - Somerset - 1947/50 Hi Dave, I too remember Betsy Corbett reasonably well. In 1956 following my having studied Construction and Building Sciences at Bristol University, I applied for a job with Simms Son and Cook (Nottingham) to supervise (with four others) the construction of a satellite village in Iran. The Iranian Oil Co. who we were building the village for, required a character reference from me, so I contacted Mr Wheatley. Mr Wheatley suggested (because I was situated in Derby at the time)that I go and see the Rev. Corbett who was the Chaplain at Trinity College in Derbyshire (I believe). So I drove to Trinity College and Rev. Corbett invited me to his and Betsy's home for dinner. The Rev. Corbett gave me a glowing reference, which without it I wouldn't have gone to Iran. I still have the reference to this day. It was all a very good experience. Many years later after I had immigrated to Canada I read in the Barnardo's Guild Messenger, that the Rev. Corbett had died and that Betsy would like to hear from anyone from Goldings who knew her. So I contacted Betsy and we corresponded for a few years. At the time Betsy was as well, in touch with Parks, (who I believe must have been one of the best buglers Goldings ever produced). I wonder if Parks is still around? As far as Staff are concerned, of course, Cliff (Pop) Steele is still very much with us and long may it be so! 26 October 2015 - Witley, Surrey Malcolm (St Micheals Church Waterford) Hi Dave, I have submitted the application to cut back the branches overhanging the war memorial and the memorial bench. I am away for 5 weeks from early November and expect the tree officer will want a site meeting so this probably won't go ahead until the New Year and then the process takes some time. I will keep you posted. Malcolm 25 October 2015 Victor King 51-54 I am still trying to work my way around your web site and hope to add some posts soon. I was at Goldings 51-54 and I recognise all the names in your reply to Charles Coley dated 15 October 2015. However, the main reason for contacting you today is to belatedly report the sad passing of Betsy Corbett on 4th March 2015. I visited her on a few occasions at her house in Ludlow and contacted her on the phone once or twice a year. I phoned today and her number was unobtainable. My worst fears were confirmed with a follow up call to St Lawrence Church Ludlow. Many old boys will remember the Rev Corbett and perhaps Mrs Corbett when she braved injury at the monthly dance sessions in the gym. She was a lovely lady and at 93 years old she was as bright as a button, although she said she was a little forgetful. I can’t help feeling she is the last of the staff members of my era and would appreciate any information to the contrary. PS. It was my intention to add just one picture of Betsy and me taken a few years ago but when I used your web site search facility to find Corbett, it returned a nil result. I have therefore attached a further two photos. One of Rev Corbett and one of Betsy Corbett when she was at Goldings. Included in the last one is Mr Tordoff and possibly his wife. On Tuesday, I had a nice phone chat with Reg Longman in Canada. Although I had already received the news from David Wheatley at the reunion, It was sad to hear that Reg is suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease and confined to bed.
