THROUGHOUT THE LIFETIME OF THIS WEBSITE, SINCE ME AND MY WIFE HAVE BEEN RUNNING IT, IT HAS TENDED TO LACK THE INPUT I EXPECTED OCCASIONALLY. BUT RECENTLY WE'VE HAD AN ENQUIRY FROM A YOUNG LADY WHO LIVES IN HERTFORD ASKING IF SHE COULD USE SOME OF THE HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENED AT GOLDINGS, WHICH GIVES ME A VERY UPLIFTING FEELING, THAT NOT ONLY DO WE GET OLD BOYS AND STAFF VIEW THE SITE BUT OTHER PERSONS NOT INVOLVED IN GOLDINGS REQUEST TO USE THE INFORMATION AND IMAGES FOR THEIR HISTORICAL FACTS FOR THEM TO RECORD THE HISTORY OF HERTFORD.
WHICH JUST GOES TO SHOW THAT OTHER PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED IN OUR SITE

Dave
my reply to Maddy I sent a number of photos of our swimming pool at Goldings
Hello Maddy
Many thanks for including us in your thesis set out are a number of images of
the swimming pool in the River Beane, feel free to use any of them with our blessing
The pool was by the second bridge on the left past the lodge on the North Road,
it was used from about 1923 to 1937, if you note on the one image the learner swimmers
was tethered to a rope across the shallow end, with a view to learning to swim before
they left the school.
There was a worry later on that the boys may catch polio from the river and so it was
decided by the staff that the boys and staff would build a proper swimming pool.
so the boys and the staff dug out a new pool in 1938. I was also taught to swim in 1962.
I was later filled in after 1967 as the council had to fill it in for safety reason, as one
councillor told me, people walk the dogs in the grounds, and the council was concerned
someone would fall in.
So it only exists in my memory
please find attached images and pleas contact me if you need any more info

Hi Dave,
Wow these are absolutely brilliant – as is the history that accompanies it and your personal experiences there. I’ve seen photos in archives of people learning to swim tethered with ropes for safety but never seen any evidence of it happening in the local area so this is particularly fab.
Would you be willing for me to include some of this history alongside the images? And if I do so would you be happy for me to refer you by your first name and as one of the ‘old boys’ of Goldings, or would you prefer to remain anonymous?
I’m an anthropologist – so having personal stories that accompany these images and histories is really central to what I’m trying to achieve through the chapter!

Morning Dave,
You’re a hero – I appreciate this so much, it is really going to give the section on history of swimming some life 😊
Keep me posted if you find it.
Thanks again,
