Today's sad news of the death of former Bolton & England centre forward, Nat Lofthouse, will bring back memories for some Goldings old boys. I had the pleasure of seeing him play on a number of occations. I remember going from Goldings with Dave Barlow to see him play for Old England v Young England at Highbury one Friday night for the then traditional pre cup final Eve fixture. What a great no nonsense player he was.
I think the last time I saw him play was in 1959 when Nottingham Forest beat Bolton 2-1 in the FA cup sixth round, then went on to beat "Pin Head's" Aston Villa in the semi final, before Forest beat Luton Town 2-1 at Wembley when Roy Dwight broke his leg and became the only side to win the cup with 10 men as there were no substitutes in those day's. Before someone say's I must be old, I'm only 68 and proud to say that I saw every game including the final at Wembley which cost me 3 shillings and sixpence.
