Today's sad news of the death of former Bolton & England centre forward, Nat Lofthouse, will bring back memories for some Goldings old boys. I had the pleasure of seeing him play on a number of occations. I remember going from Goldings with Dave Barlow to see him play for Old England v Young England at Highbury one Friday night for the then traditional pre cup final Eve fixture. What a great no nonsense player he was.
I think the last time I saw him play was in 1959 when Nottingham Forest beat Bolton 2-1 in the FA cup sixth round, then went on to beat "Pin Head's" Aston Villa in the semi final, before Forest beat Luton Town 2-1 at Wembley when Roy Dwight broke his leg and became the only side to win the cup with 10 men as there were no substitutes in those day's. Before someone say's I must be old, I'm only 68 and proud to say that I saw every game including the final at Wembley which cost me 3 shillings and sixpence.

It's a well known fact that Princess Margaret refused to come to Goldings until the 60's due to the 50's hooligan element, something about not being able to wear her royal jewels with confidence and that famous quote in the Goldonian " My Sister and I know 60's lads will look after my well being, and my entourage will not have to spend time looking round the grounds to recover the Rolls! and I must have a word with Jack about his Porridge receipt!"

I'm on your side clive. The 60s lads would not stand a chance against us 50s lot. What Dave don't know, is that we had the REAL Jack's Pongy. By 1960 the Health and Safety Executive had banned Jack from wiping his nose on his sleeve and from adding FAG ASH to our favouite breakfast.
