I recently sent an invitation to Mrs Elsie Kanolty (Mr DeBoecks daughter)
She's so sorry she can't make it to the reunion due to her age(83)and failing eyesight.
I will display an extract of some parts of her letter.
"When I was at Goldings one of the boys was my boyfriend who used to send me love letters, my mother had to hide them as my father (Mr DeBoeck) was very strict, and frowned upon such liaison with the boys. The boy was a Tinsmith and left about 1939 to Clapton,he then joined the Navy on H.M.S. Barham and I wondered what ever happened to him after because he stopped writing to me. Many years later my friend Doreen Vigus ( this is the daughter of Farmer Vigus who's field we had to pick potatoe's)and I were talking about this boy when she told me that he also wrote to her, even when he was in the Navy (now this does sound like a Goldings boy!)I was so shocked, but never came across this boy again.
Another incident which was cause for concern was when Miss Marchant (Mrs Maslin to us )and Jim Maslin announced they were to get married, and for anyone that didn't know Jim Maslin was also at one time a Barnardo Boy,and Miss Marchant was the daughter of Mr Marchant the band master at Goldings and before that at Stepney and was asked to get a band up and running at Stepney by William Baker to help with the recruitment drive for the First World War as at the time he was at Watts and was to later march the boys into Goldings from Stepney April 1922.
Well we were allowed to mix with the boys! but to marry one well that was taboo! but as we all know it was a very long and successful marriage.
What other stories remain untold that at the time were controversial?

The latest on the message below, Diane is going to send me a photo and also a copy of the letter sent to the family by Mr Wheatley so we can display it on the site.

This one is a long shot, but yesterday I had a lady come on trying to trace her father Alfred Keen nicknamed "Buster" who was at Goldings, but captured in the war by the Japanese, sent to a war camp were he died. She has a letter from Mr Wheatley of condolence for such a tragic loss, but assures me he was there under Mr Macdonald the Governor but is unable to tell his years spent at Goldings, hence the phone call.I have sifted through all the Goldonians I have but to no avail, but I would imagine at the time censorship would not allow them to print his passing in the Goldonian at the time or perhaps the information only came to light with the Japanese surrender,so as Mr Wheatley came to Goldings in April 1945 he would probaly have the task of sending the school's condolence on being given the information, as she has just found the letter..it's a long shot I know but it would be so nice if we could help.I have suggested she contact's Barnardo's if we can't help...but who knows! I will follow this story with interest.
