Dave Just had a phone call from Bernard Jennings 1947-51 McCall,is coming to the reunion this year,he hasn't been for over five years. He asked me if anyone recalls the few stories he told me! In the shoe cleaning room when they used to take the cover off the light switch and touch the two wires together to make a spark so they could light there roll up! When they had fish cake for tea,most of the lads didn't like it and in the dining room was a clock so they all used to throw their fish cake at it! at the end of teatime the clock was covered in fish cake! Punishment for smoking with Joe Patch,the roller they used to roll the Cricket table you had to push it until Joe said thats enough! and I can tell you that it was very heavy! Another punishment was you had to hang on the wall bars in the gym until Joe was ready to let you come down. Tough old man but very fair. When Stormy Tempest told us "Cheese for tea today lads" well we all knew it was mouldy so one boy threw it at him and said "Well you can have then" and the rest of the 300 boys pelted him with it! keep these stories coming otherwise they will be lost in the sands of time. 20 September 2010 - The 60'S were not the only ones who were naughty ANGELL Hi Dave, I was just watching a tv programme, when it reminded me of something what happened about 20 years ago when I was in Toronto Canada, I was going to a pub where the British people went, and I'd had a few dates with a girl from Scotland, one day she said to me you know James? yes I said, she then told me they had invited him to a party for Saturday last week, when James said my dad is coming over from london that day, so she said well just bring him with you, ok he said, but I must tell you my dad is black. I was not at the party but, I met his dad in the pub later that week, and I got talking to him and to cut a long story short he was a Goldings Old Boy, from the 50s, "Great Guy" What a coincidence. Tony 19 September 2010 - london Maria Corrin Thanks very much for that. I think I might know Angus. It was late 60's early 1970 - 71 and he did work down Mead Lane. Word had it that he joined the army but I don't know how true that is. 2 other names I remember were Willy and Yousef (I know I've most likely spelt that wrong) We were sweethearts for a while back then and I'm happily married now but I often wonder what happened to him because he just disappeared. Kind regards Maria 18 September 2010 Dave to Maria Hello Maria, I have put your message on our web site, good luck with trying to trace him.If he was at the Verney, that tells me he was a Printer, and if it was the late sixties by then, Goldings had closed and they moved down to Mead Lane Hertford by then Barnardo's had purchased premise's in Hoddesden with the view of selling off the Verney. I will look through the Goldonian (our school magazine) to see if I can help further as sometimes they wrote in as Old Boys, failing that at our reunion on the 2nd October you may want to call in or I can ask other Printers from the time at the reunion who still live in the area, Winnie Norton, Ron Porter (who now works in Tesco's Hertford) and Angus MeGeoch who used to work for the Hertfordshire Mercury were all printers around that time and may with a bit of luck can help you!
