THE UNVEILING There was almost a carnival atmosphere by Waterford's war memorial on the afternoon of Saturday, 22 April. Flags and balloons were arranged round photographic displays that former Barnardo boys from Goldings and members of their families were eagerly examining. A large lumpy object was covered by an enormous Union Jack. The weather was the warmest and sunniest that we had had for ages and added to the cheerfulness of the occasion, the unveiling of the Goldings Commemoration Seat, provided by the old boys. A short service of prayers and readings, conducted by Churchwarden, John Wood, was held in a full church. It was followed immediately by spoken reminiscences from Jimmy James, a former head boy who was also a member of the teaching staff, from Waterford's Greta Saunders, and also from David Wheatley, the son of the last headmaster. For those who wished, there was time to look at the names of Goldings boys who are buried in the churchyard, so beautifully listed in the church by the late May Bennett, the calligrapher. And time too to find their graves. Then when everyone had wandered down to the war memorial Jimmy James pulled away the Union Jack with a flourish and revealed the seat. He handed it over to Churchwarden, John Bennett. Cameras clicked away as groups of old Goldings boys arranged themselves on and around the bench. (For pictures see www.gpldings.org, click Photo Gallery, then Commemoration Bench). Refreshments were provided in the sunshine beside the Village ..Hail and as we chatted we learnt'more details of the lives of those former Barnardo boys who were present. A deep feeling of gratitude for their education at Goldings was evident and more than one was heard to say that he didn't know what would have happened to him if it hadn't been for Barnardo's. From 1921 - 1967, Goldings, the big mansion to the south-west of Waterford, was a Dr Barnardo's home and school: The William Baker Technical School.
