Hi Dave,
Barnardo’s favourite Dickey Boy and Goldings ‘licker’ (Alan Dearman)along with his really nice wife Margaret are on their way home to Blighty. We believe they will tell you that they had a great time here in Canada.
They went on the ‘Maid of the Mist’ (boat) to the bottom of Niagara Falls and went on a wine tasting tour in the Niagara Peninsular amongst other things, and as well experienced having ‘David Wheatley’s Delicious Baked Salmon’ for dinner on one occasion.
Alan also was the guest speaker at a Barnardo function on ‘British Home Child Day’, an annual event which takes place on September 28th each year. He got us all laughing, speaking about cockroaches – and explaining Goldings' unique colloquial slang like ‘Richard the Third’- ‘Crusties’ and several other words. He did a very good job representing Barnardo’s and embarrassing the only other Dicky Boy in the room.
Ask him and Margaret about Tim Horton’s coffee shop. They wouldn’t let us pass one, so that they could get a Canadian Maple donut. The entire time we were with them was really just wonderful.

Hello Peter D. regarding your getting in touch with someone in Canada who could help find relatives migrated from England to Canada during the past century.
There’s rather a nice lady who I’m sure will help you find some details regarding British Barnardo children who were migrated to Canada. Her name is Ivy Sucie. Unfortunately, for privacy reasons I shouldn’t give out her email address on the internet.
However my email address, which has already been displayed on this site several times is: longman.rd@gmail.com.
If you would like to send me an email direct, I will be pleased to send you Ivy’s.

You could of course contact Barnardo’s Making Connections, they too will give you the information you are looking for, however they will quite possibly charge you for any research they do. It wouldn’t cost anything if you contact Ivy.

Regards, Reg

Yesterday I was contacted by Keith Brierley, who with his twin brother was at Goldings, and both left in 1955 and moved to Blackpool where they worked as Coach Builders. They are both, due to ill health unable to attend the re-union but send there regards to us all.I have sent them the D.V.D's on Goldings to help them enjoy their fond memories of Goldings. They remember a few of the lads names, especially Billy Knight and his brother arriving. For those who are not aware when Mr DeBoeck retired in 1965 they both returned to continue teaching in the Sheet Metal Shop and were there when sadly Mr Wheatley told all the Staff that Goldings was to close, and they are both convinced that Goldings should have continued, even up to the present day.Like Jimmy James,Mr Noble, who were also old boys, felt the need to return to their "Home" Goldings!
