Hi Dave, thought I should let you know that the ‘licker’ and his charming wife Margaret Dearman arrived here in Canada OK, and let me say what ‘bright sparks’ they are, it’s a pleasure having them here. Alan met up with is long lost cousin Michael and it was touching watching them reminiscing and crying on each other’s shoulders. (Be sure to give him the gears when you meet up with him at the reunion.) But seriously we have lots to talk about regarding Goldings. I told him we were going to have ‘dogmeat’ for breakfast today. Alan doesn’t seem to remember what ‘Dogmeat’ was. Sammy and Scoffer would know. Mind you, the food may have improved since the late 40s after we had left, but believe me ‘dogmeat’ (spiced sausage meat patties), like cheese pie were just great. Tell you more later. Reg Longman

Dear Dave and Goldings Brothers I am sorry that once again I will be unable to attend this years Reunion due to family commitments, But I do wish you all a great day amidst the surrounds of our historic old Barnardo Home Goldings or William Baker Technical School. I will be thinking of you and remembering the day I first went there in August 1958. God Bless you all. Regards Skelly Elkins.

Hi Dave and fellow Golding's Brothers. Golding's as we all know was unique, it's staff were unique, most of whom were employed by a unique head master, Mr Wheatley. Their commitment to the job and care towards us boys has never been in question. From my own personal experience at Barkingside, the situation is the same. Barnardo's today is a different organisation but still supports and helps thousands of vulnerable children all over the UK. The staff who work with these kids in over 800 Barnardo projects are, I'm sure, dedicated and committed to their work. I meet many of these staff around the country as I do my presentations and their commitment is clear for all to see. Anyway guys, I'm off to Canada in a couple of days to spend two weeks as a guest of Former Golding's boy Reginald Longman and very much looking forward to meeting up with Reg and his wife Donna once again. We last met up in Melton Mowbray in 2013 when they last visited the UK. I will also be meeting up with my long lost cousin Michael who I have not seen for 59 years and all made possible by Reg's invitation. My visit coincides with the Canadian National 'Child at Home Day' on 28th September to remember the thousands of Barnardo children migrated to Canada from 1863 - 1948. I feel very honoured to have been invited to speak to the Hazelbrae Barnardo Home Memorial Group in Peterborough, Ontario as part of this event. Margaret and I will be back just before the Golding's reunion and will be able to tell you all about it. See you all on Oct 4th and some on Oct 3rd.

Len, Paul was my first contact at Goldings who helped me to gain access to Goldings with the residents blessings and is the Residents Associations Chairman. I have been informed this morning that Mrs Fordham has passed away, she was a member of Staff along with her husband who was a Gardener, who passed away earlier this year and both came to our re-union in 2004.Will Staff of the calbre of many Goldings Staff be ever found in todays Barnardo's ? They were given little encouragement by Barnardo's along with low pay, but with mountains of dedication to us.
