Had a very pleasant phone call this morning from Sid Keeling Goldings 1935-38 MaCall House. He helped dig out our "New" swimming pool in 1938 and most of the rubble was scattered on the nearby field, and when they first filled it "the tiles fell off" because they hadn't given enough time for them to set! they had lots of problems in the early days with the pool.In them days the Governor did the church service (Macdonald)and if you passed him around the grounds you had to salute him! Sends his apologies for not attending the re-union due to the fact he is 90 this year and lives in Northern Ireland but sends his warm wish's to us all.I am sending him photo copies of the Goldonian 35-38 along with the D.V.D.

Since talking to his wife (Alan Blackburn)she tells me he also played with some of the "Busby Babes" in his National Service days, mainly Duncan Edwards (who incidently hailed down the road from me, Dudley, and is still revered in the Black Country)Eddie Coleman, and as she says "many of them that perished in the Munich Disaster"

Dave, I remember meeting Alan Blackburn many years ago after I left Golding. Although I did not know Alan at Goldings, I knew of him. Alan played for Halifax Town against Forest at the City Ground in the Second round of the league cup on 6th October 1960 with Forest winning 2-0. In those days these games were played in midweek before flood lights were installed. I remember going to the players dressing room after the game and introducing myself to Alan. We spent about 15 minutes chatting about our times at Goldings and I remember Alan telling me that Mr Wheatley was his biggest influence. I did a similar thing many years later when Justin Fashanu, an ex Barnardo boy, joined forest and remained friends with him for a long time. I also had a big bust up with Brian Clough over the way he treated Justin, who as we all know, took his own life.

Today I had my first meeting with Alan Blackburn, not in the best of health, but those who didn't know, Alan was a superb athlete at Corris House and Goldings and signed professional forms at 17 for West Ham, and I'm led to believe he did this signing down bottom field with all the boys in attendance(source Walter Watkins)His wife did say he had the choice of West Ham or Arsenal, but the agent for West Ham was more pressing, and her words not mine " But he should have signed for Arsenal!" She blames his present condition on his heading that heavy football throughout his career. He is married to his girlfriend from Much Wenlock who he met when he was in Corris House all those years ago. As he promised, as his wife said "He just turned up one day and said I told you I would come back!" She has promised me photo's later of him to post on the site. Alan Blackburn welcome back..Goldings.

Post War Duo Discovery from Goldings

At the Memorial Service further talents have now been "Discovered" by Lew Grade "The Andrews Sister?" Len Harpin and John Horn who have requested a musical interlude outside the Church along the lines of "Billy Cottons Band Show" with the world famous Organist from Blackpool,Reginald Dixon. If further "Talent" from Goldings comes forward we intend to call it the "The Z Factor Show" with Bob Robertson as Simon Cowell, with his trousers up to his shoulder blades and Alan Dearman as Cheryl Cole in "Drag" perhaps John Sansom as Piers Morgan! and to complete the line up Peter Drummond to add a little youth to the panel as Danni Minouge. The combined age of this lot comes to 1700 years give or take a month!
