I remember when the whole of the school decided to creep out at night and go and raid the fruit orchard, so just after lights out all the boys made imitation bodies in their beds and crept out of the windows and down the stairways towards the orchard and as I was one of the leaders of this mission I was one of the last to go along with about 12 other boys. We were just about to go when the school fire alarm sounded and all the staff came running around demanding we put a blanket over our shoulders and make our way down to the bottom of Mr. Wheatley's staircase. There we were met by a somewhat disturbed Headmaster although he did say to us boys who were there in front of him, how much he appreciated our honesty and loyalty in not joining the other boys raiding the orchard, also he explained how every boy when finally caught will be severely dealt with. (If only he had known the truth)
I also remember when I and a few other boys (Not sure but I think there was 6 of us) got pass outs for the coming Saturday to go by train to London and have a tattoo done on our arms. I personally was not sure I really wanted a tattoo but felt I couldn't let the other boys know this as if I dropped out of the gang now I would find myself dangling from one of the balcony's and eventually they would let me drop to the ground so I felt a tattoo was probably a better bet than a broken arm and leg so I resigned myself that I would be going to London on Saturday.
However Friday afternoon came and I noticed Mr. Stevenson (Printing Dept) putting up the Goldings Old Boys football team sheet for the next day's match as I had never played for them before I didn't take much notice until I heard the words "Hillier get over here now" It was Mr. Stevenson telling me I was playing for the Goldings Old Boys team the next day (Saturday). I could not wait to tell the tattoo gang I couldn't go to London due to Mr. Stevenson's command and they accepted it and also with no threats of violence to myself which was a big result.
That evening the gang returned from London with small swallow tattoos on their wrists, however I am eternally grateful to Mr. Stevenson because I really did not want a tattoo.

Just a note on Mr. Stevenson who I have to say I thought the world of him and his family although when I first came across Mr. Stevenson it was always at the bottom of the main staircase with me returning from yet again raiding the orchard and him catching me with a jumper full of apples. Every time I lost the apples and 2 weeks pocket money. ( 2/2d )
It was only much later when I was attending a Goldings Old Boys football team presentation evening that his good wife explained to me how he used to watch me go out and waited for me to come back with a load of apples up my jumper. Guess where all those apples ended up? I can tell you in Mrs. Stevensons kitchen who made brilliant apple pies for good old Mr. Stevenson.
Finally just to say once again Dave thanks for all your help. I will keep in touch and e.mail some more stories later
Take care Ray Hillier
