Just a note on Mr. Stevenson who I have to say I thought the world of him and his family although when I first came across Mr. Stevenson it was always at the bottom of the main staircase with me returning from yet again raiding the orchard and him catching me with a jumper full of apples. Every time I lost the apples and 2 weeks pocket money. ( 2/2d ) It was only much later when I was attending a Goldings Old Boys football team presentation evening that his good wife explained to me how he used to watch me go out and waited for me to come back with a load of apples up my jumper. Guess where all those apples ended up? I can tell you in Mrs. Stevensons kitchen who made brilliant apple pies for good old Mr. Stevenson. Finally just to say once again Dave thanks for all your help. I will keep in touch and e.mail some more stories later Take care Ray Hillier

I went with my father when Allen Blackburn had his trials with Arsenal & West Ham. Both clubs wanted to sign Allen, but my father suggested to him that West Ham had a more family atmosphere and he might be happier there. Allen's first two years were very promising, but eventually the club advised my father that he lacked sufficient pace at the highest level. Some years later, we went to see Allen play in the Southern League at Guildford and had a good chat afterwards. My other memory of Allen was at Dymchurch where the Goldings lads chatted up the French girls (not surprising!) and their yell was "Allez Blackie!" every time he got the ball in the local football matches.
