I went with my father when Allen Blackburn had his trials with Arsenal & West Ham. Both clubs wanted to sign Allen, but my father suggested to him that West Ham had a more family atmosphere and he might be happier there. Allen's first two years were very promising, but eventually the club advised my father that he lacked sufficient pace at the highest level. Some years later, we went to see Allen play in the Southern League at Guildford and had a good chat afterwards. My other memory of Allen was at Dymchurch where the Goldings lads chatted up the French girls (not surprising!) and their yell was "Allez Blackie!" every time he got the ball in the local football matches.

Hi Dave Thank you so much for your help with supplying me with the e.mail address of John Allen it really is appreciated. Also to say the work you and your family have done creating the web site on Goldings is brilliant and now because of it's up to date information I look at it most days and notice more and more old boys are doing the same and contacting you. ( Award yourself 1/2 oz Old Holborn and 6 apples from the orchard FOC ) I am always looking back and thinking about the time I spent at Goldings and I have to say I enjoyed most of it although it did have it's moments but I played a lot of sport so that helped. Also I had so many laughs especially with the different characters at the school and some of the things we used to get up to Reading your web site has now made me realise how much the staff went through during and after the war and how much effort they made in helping us at Goldings although at the time they were not always appreciated. If I had my time again the words THANK YOU come to mind. Finally Dave have you ever heard from or had contact with Charlie Hill and Stephen Howard? Once again thank you for everything and I will keep in touch. Ray Hillier

Like many, I was sad to hear the news of the passing of Alan Blackburn who was at Golding's a short time before myself. I had the pleasure of once meeting him when he played for Halifax Town in a league cup tie at Nottingham Forest not long after I had left Golding's. The game was played in midweek with an afternoon KO as like many clubs in those days, there were no floodlights. I think Forest won 3-1 and after the game I went to the visitors dressing room and introduced myself. Alan & I spent about 20 minutes talking about our times at Golding's and he was interested to learn how Mr Wheatley, Sid Whitbread and Skip Culver were getting on. I think we got carried away as the Halifax team coach was waiting to leave the ground and Alan had to run for it.
I was on the Barnardo web site a short time ago and was also sad to see that we have lost another brother, Leslie Thomas, who died yesterday. RIP to Alan and Leslie.

Some memories of me have appeared lately, so I feel I should make a few comments. I left Goldings to do my National Service in the RAF. After demob I lodged in Ware, travelling to Goldings for a short refresher course. I then obtained employment with Simson Shand in Hertford. I married my wife Evelyn and a few months later moved with the firm to the Town of Harlow. Making steady progress with the firm I ended as composing room manager. The firm was sold and I became redundant on my 50th birthday. I eventually obtained a senior post as production manager with another firm until retirement. Evelyn and I have two daughters and two grandsons and have settled in a bungalow in Norfolk
