Who would thought all those far off days at sunny Goldings that we would be wishing each other "happy birthday" in 2013,as we tried to keep it quiet when we were at Goldings because of any repercussions that could befall us if any one knew! No chance of a birthday cake! only cocoa and rubber plonk! Happy Birthday Bob for tommorrow.

Hello David I'm really sorry I couldn't have talked to you more while I was in Melton Mowbray meeting with Alan Dearman, but I could only visit with Alan and Margaret for just a few hours due to the fact that later that afternoon I and my wife Donna were due back in Nottingham to again visit my ailing sister there. I had no idea you were on the phone when Alan passed the phone to me, but I was very pleased that they did. I'm sure that so many of us now ageing Goldings boys are so very grateful to you, having started the Goldings Guest Book as it is today. But having said that, I feel no matter what your means are, you should allow and even expect us followers of the Goldings Guest Book, to be able to contribute to the cost of paying for the site. I don't pretend to know what the cost are for a website, but what ever they are let us all contribute. My suggestion therefore is, that we be given the opportunity to voluntarily join the Goldings Guest Book or perhaps call ourselves The 'Goldings 'Dicky Boys' Club' - or Group , Alumni or otherwise something like that, and if you don't want to actually charge a membership, then simply ask for an annual contribution of say 10 pounds, ( I have no idea how much) almost anyone of us can easily afford that and will be willing to do so. Of course I am aware that anyone will be able to access the site with-out having paid the voluntary membership fee, but if they don't or cant, then who cares. Certainly most of us will want to contribute. I most certainly do. We are just so fortunate that you, together with your son, have the ability and put in the time free of charge, to manage the website. Please feel free to publish my suggestion, which I hope will perhaps generated some response or otherwise promote other suggestions. Kindest regards, and many thanks to you. Reg Longman

Dave B. My wife Donna and I have just returned home to Canada after having spent the past five weeks in the UK. In the early part of our visit we went to Melton Mowbray and met Alan Dearman and his lovely wife Margaret, and as Alan mentioned in a previous entry into the Guestbook, we coincidently exchanged pork pies. Alan is just the man he sounds like in his Guest Book entries. He is among other things, interesting to speak with, dedicated to raising money for Barnardo’s and a very nice chap. But above all, he is a Dicky Boy to the core. I’ve read his book ‘Before, During and After Barnardo’s’ and although it’s not huge, it tells the story of one who didn’t fare too well in his early years but now enjoys the life he lives with Margaret. As well, Alan gave me a restored antique Barnardo’s charity box, which now sits in a prominent place in my house; it will be an interesting conversation piece. Then to my surprise he managed to get you Dave, on the phone. Although we didn’t have much time to speak, I’ll be dropping you a line soon to promote the idea of how the Goldings Guest Book followers can contribute to the costs of the website. Shortly after saying cheerio to Alan and Margaret we visited David Wheatley and his also lovely partner Carolyn. I was so looking forward to again meeting David after 63 years, and was honestly amazed at him being able to remember me. After all, I was just one of 240 boys during 1947-1950, and he was at Goldings and met so many of us over perhaps the 20 years he was there. I pride myself in having a fairly good memory, but I believe David’s is even better than mine. David cooked dinner. The poached Salmon (Canada is famous for Salmon) was amongst the finest Salmon dinners we had ever had. Being such an accomplished and educated man such as he is, David together with his also likewise knowledgeable partner Carolyn, made us feel very at ease and we chatted for several hours. Rising early the next morning, with Carolyn still in her nighty (sorry Carolyn), we left for N.Wales to visit more friends and to continue on with our very memorable UK visit. Kindest regards to you all, Reg Longman
