Further to my recent posting on Barnardo Talks. As we live in a small world, I am no longer surprised who I may come accross during my travels. At the end of my latest presentation today for the Enderby U3A group, I had a long and interesting chat with a guy who approached me at the end of my talk as he was interested in my mention of Wimbledon and the Goldings Ball Boys. The person in question was "Roy(Bobby)Wilson, the former Tennis player. During his playing career in the 50s & early 60s he was a member of the British Davies cup team and partnered "Billy Knight. He also reached the Wimbledon Q-Finals 4 times and had some success in the US open. Players he met during his playing coreer include, Sven Davidson, Drobny, Ashley Cooper, Roy Emerson, Rod Laver, and Bob Hewitt to mention just a few. There must be some of you out there who were Ball Boy's at some of his matches. Only had a quick luck on our site and found some referance by my old mate Bill Charlton who ball boyed one of his matches in the late 1950s.
It was a interesting chat and only wish that I had longer to chat with him. So.............over to you guys for your memories!!

Well done Alan, and Keith I can't thank you enough for visiting Rodney Mitchell, but we must have others in the area who could visit him which would surely give him the support from us to help lift his spirit's, so over to you Alan and Barnardo's, lets show him that we were all brothers who take care of each other! and Barnardo's really care! to give him our time with a short but very welcome visit from another Goldings Old Boy.
P.S. Peter Drummond (60's) has promised a call.

On Monday 13th August, I had the pleasure of giving my 27th Barnardo Talk/presentation this year. On this occasion it was for the South Leicester U3A and in the 100 plus audience, were Three ladies who lived in Barkingside during the 1950's, Two of them were cleaners in the Village and cleaned the cottages. Also present was a guy raised in Barnardos who spent a short time at Goldings in 1942 before moving to the Watts Naval training school. Unfortunately, he left before I got the opportunity to obtain his name, but not before I pointed him in the direction of our web site and mentioned our annual reunions.
I did however, get the impression that not all of his Barnardo times were good!!
On the 15th August I will be giving another, this time to the Enderby U3A group. Voluntary donations from organisations for my talks this year have exceeded over £2000,00 which I pass on to Barnardos.
Looking forward to meeting up with Terry Whitehead again in York next monday for only the second time in over 53 years since we left Goldings.
Soon be October 6th!!!!

Hi Dave. I went up to Gillingham to see Rodney today. I was greeted at the door by, Oh Rodney will be so pleased to see you today, his wife died two week ago and the Cremation was today but he couldn't make it.
Anyway Rodney was in bed but awake so I spent and hour with him chatting about our separate times in Goldings.

Took my lap top and showed him all the Photo's Old & New and last years Reunion, sometimes when talking to him he would just stop and stare I wasn't sure if he truly under stood all we were talking about.
He mentioned that his Wife Wendy Esther had died two weeks ago but he couldn't make the journey due to short notice.

He has 2 Son's and a Step Daughter and has Grandchildren but wouldn't answer when I asked how many G/C he has. He doesn't seem to get many visits even from his family.
You seem to be his favourite person at the moment and says he definitely wants to go to the Reunion this year and says that he could manage in a car as long as there is room for a wheel chair, if not he would go by train as long as someone gets him on or off at each end, but on talking to one of the staff when I was leaving they think it is hardly likely he would manage the journey as he hardly ever leaves the home, in my short time with him I would feel the same. But he has asked if you will talk to him again.

He remembers Pin Head, Embledon, Joe Patch also a Michael Jarvis who was a school captain and a Alan Blackburn who used to play for West Ham. He was in the Sheet Metal Work with de'Boeck?

He has asked me to visit him again, which I've told him I will but it will be as and when I can due to me still working and living in Ramsgate about 50 miles away.

Hope this helps a little and once again Dave I'm sorry we can't make it this year, but I will look forward to seeing any new pictures.
Best Regards to You and your Family.
Keith.
