The Continuing Saga P. Drummond
As many of you must re-call,
Somerset was just a little way down the hall,
The continuing smell that wafted on high,
Was the bodily smell of one Macandrew boy.
We suffered in Somerset the pugent air,
That was someone's from the Macandrew lair!
We in Shackleton had to tolerate every morn,
The Somerset via Macandrew morning call,
So in our sitting we had a talk!
Then the house captain suggested "a Cork"
One night round about dawn
After many smelly time's became quite forlorn
The answer to our problem we undertake,
With the prefects ok it was a piece of cake.
The following morning to smell the air,
Was a delight for us all to share,
No more pungent smells
The problem solved and it tells!
But after many years the offending cork excel's
No more did we suffer the little jolly sailors smells
But in our haste to get away
The cork has not been removed even to this day.
So when you next observe his walk
It all came about due to a useful CORK!

Six in the morning you hear the church bell,
Along came Pop Steele to open our cell,
Pull back the blanket and out came the smell,
There's nothing like Macandrew in Dickies hotel

My recolection of the song is........
There is a mouldy dump down goldings way,
Where we got bread and cheese ten times a day,
Eggs and bacon we did'nt see, we got sawdust in our tea,
and we are gradualy,...... Fading away, Fading away, Fading....away.....Fading....I ALSO REMEMBER.....At six in the morning we hear the church bell, along came skip culver to open our Cell, He opened the windows and empties the po, it's back to the work shops we goldings boys go.

JOHANNA.... I have a copy of "Childhood Memories" which is a Photographic history of Dr Barnardo's homes but I believe the book is now out of print.
The only photo I can find relating to the Birmingham area is "Druids Heath" Nr Walsall which opened in 1939.
Could I suggest you contact Martine King, who is our Archives Manager at Barnardo's HQ in Barkingside who may be able to help. martine.king@barnardos.org.uk
I hope this is of some help to you.
