Dave, I know Win from playing football in Hertford for many years - as a goalkeeper he stung my hands on many occasions! I also used to know a lot of the Verney boys in my younger days and they were a good bunch of lads - can't remember many names but Trevor seems to ring a bell. I grew up at Sele Farm and Goldings used to be a good playground for many of us from the estate (after you had all gone I believe) - its a lovely place and I played tennis, golf, football, cricket and fished in the grounds. Its a shame its all fenced off now but the owners have made a good job of the 'refurb'. I read your posts with interest; I know that many boys have mixed feelings about the regime but its good to know that a lot of you look back with fondness.

Researching the films that were made at Goldings or about the boys being "extras" I now have the Browning Version (made in the 50's) Starring Michael Redgrave and Jean Kent and the boys in the Church and playing Cricket, and will put stills of it on shortly, and as one of the boys at the reunion told me they had to bowl to Michael Redgrave in the film, but they kept getting him out (he was playing a England Cricketer)so the producer threw it under arm so he could hit it!
Payment to the School for being extra's! A Bell and Howell Projector, and a Radiogram! which Mr Wheatley had placed in his study!
I also have "He Who Rides a Tiger" Tom Bell and Judi Dench (which was her debut in films)1964.
The Guinea Pig,and the Green Man,also involving Goldings I'm still looking out for, bear with me! made late 40's and early 50's.

Hi Dave
Been Google-ing. My mission in doing so was to determine if there is a path through the woods to the west of Goldings to the road so I can pick up some footpaths that go initially west and then north to Bramfield and onwards to Watton-at-Stone. Then I could make a linear walk I have done mostly down the River Beane Valley (passing through Stapleford, Waterford and Waterford Meadows into a circular walk starting and ending at Hertford North Station)
In the scheme of things chanced across your site purely by chance (if Google-ing could be called that). I must confess, having read some of the stuff that I have found myself touched by all the stories about the Goldings Dr Barnardo's Home - so wanted to register that with you. It seems a special website that you have created. I have seen the Goldings buildings (now Herts CC) and it is a lovely setting.
Anyhow - if anyone still retains the local knowledge (maybe even lives near Hertford still) it would be good to know if there is a path through the woods to the west - I feel certain there must be even if it isn't a registered footpath
Here is a streetmap link to show the bit of woodland I mean

Goldings is in the bottom right corner but you'll see the woods
Happy continuing reunioning Goldings old boys!
