'Ceaucescu’s Romania with fast food outlets’ was how travel critic Theodore Dalrymple described Walsall, home to the highest concentration of saddlers on the planet. The clearly enamoured visitor went on to liken the New Art Gallery to a Stasi HQ and finished on a high note with, 'while Walsall undoubtedly exists, it is difficult to know where precisely it begins and ends, because it is in the middle of one of the largest and most depressing contiguous areas of urban devastation in the world.’ Now if that’s not reason enough to visit it, we don’t know what is.
