The open house event at Barkingside on Saturday 19th September was a most enjoyable event. There was a steady stream of visitors to the village. Cambridge cottage was a very popular place for visitors with a lot of interest in Dr Barnardos desk and clock and many personal items of our founder.
The village film was running all day and visiters were treated to a tour of the village every hour. It was nice to hear the church bells ringing several times during the day.
I was able to talk to members of the public about my time in both the village and Goldings. Much of my time was spent in the company of Alan Sibbons and his sister Julie. we had lunch together, visited the memorial in Barkinside cemetary and spent a lot of time talking about our time at Goldings. Alan and Julie are looking forward to the goldings reunion and they have now decided to spend both the Friday and Saturday in Hertford.

Hi Dave
Thanks for putting the article about the forthcomming Goldings reunion on the letters page of the Hertfordshire Mercury this week. They have done us proud with very large headlines, the rest of your excellently worded article following. As there are many local Old Boys in this area perhaps this will make the differance ( No 12)

This "joke" is from a Goldonian June 1935.
Good Lad!-William was helping in his father shop when a kindly old gentleman entered, who beamed on him and said "How nice it must be to work besides so many cakes! But don't you ever feel like you would like to eat some?"
"Oh, no sir," said William, "that would be stealing--but I gives 'em a lick now and then?"

"THE LIKES OF US" is a book by Leslie Thomas & a Musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. It tells the story of Dr Thomas Barnardo. I went to see this musical at Loughborough last Saturday and it was most enjoyable. It is being performed around the country including Sunderland, Birmingham & Spalding in the near future. If you log onto NODA (National Operatic & Dramatic Association) you can find out more.
The London "Open House" Event takes place on 19th & 20th September 2009. This event is the opening of 700 public buildings in and around london and entry is free. The List includes The Village Home at Barkingside from 10am - 5pm. Cambridge cottage and the church will will be open and there will be conducted tours of the village. I will be there all day on Saturday with Margaret. For more information, Google open House.
Dave, I submitted your letter to a number of local papers including my own, Nottingham Evening Post and they are doing a feature. I also forwarded it to BBC Radio Leicester and BBCs 'The One Show'.
