After talking on the phone with Dave we think that the shoes on the front page are the shoes which were made for the Queens Coronation in 1952/53 which may account the E-R in gold stitching on the sole

Hi all Mr Randall was my boss in the boot & shoe shop when I was there in 1944-48 onwards great man, new his job many of boys had a lot to thank him for also Mr Newbury & Mr Tordorf

Yes Dave about the shoes, if you put your right foot in one, and your left foot in the other, then do the laces up they keep your feet warm in the winter.
I know that cos I was in the bootmakers for a while.

Dave,
The photo of Mr. Randall who was in charge of the Bootmakers Department in the 50's I think was demonstrating stitching technique rather than making shoes. However, as always I could be wrong.
