I'm not sure if many of you lads remember Alf at Goldings, but Alf spent most of his time there in and out of Hospital due to a major health condition,Sick Bay,Hertford Hospital, and others to numerous to mention. When he was a patient especially in Hospitals out of Hertford he never had a visit from anyone,so on visiting day out of their kindness the nurse's would take him into the staff room.On his return to Goldings after many operations to him Mr Newton enquired "How are you boy,is everthing okay" at this Alf broke down and replied "Mr Newton I'm much better thank you, but I never once had a visitor". At this Mr Newton charged up to the office, not saying a word to Alf.From that day on Alf.. ALWAYS had a visitor, usually Bernard Nixon, the Chaplain.
This story was told to me by Alf who finds it difficult to get to the re-unions, but is in contact with me on a regular basis.
I think this story sums up the esteem we held of Mr Newton and his family, but more so now than perhaps at the time Dave

The picture of Mr Randall reminded me of the time we had night class lessons with him one night a week in the winter months I can't remember what the subject was it could have been maths, being in the tinsmiths meant we had two nights lessons with Mr de Boeck geometry and practical drawing, we would get Mr Randall to deversify from the lesson and tell us some part of his life so he would spend half the lesson recalling his experiences, such as the time he served in the first world war and the time he was a sniper in the trenches.

After talking on the phone with Dave we think that the shoes on the front page are the shoes which were made for the Queens Coronation in 1952/53 which may account the E-R in gold stitching on the sole
