Many thanks Richard, I think your answer along with Pop does appear to clear things up? As Pop says they may have been the house colours, and pinned as you say, because you have explained the chevron I can now see it when I look again at the boy on the winning line.I thank you for your interest and any other information you can offer us of your time spent there.I believe the boys dining room and ablutions block were offices?

Dave,

I'm not an old boy, but someone who worked there for 9 years until 1995.

But I am an athlete, a road runner to be precise, and on the site you asked if anyone knew what the markings are on the boys' vests.

Well, to my slightly experienced eye, they are pinned on numbers.

The chap who is crossing the line has had his number fold back on itself so that only a 'chevron' of the dark side can be seen.
Why they were pinned on with a diamond effect, I don't know...although it might mean you only needed two safety pins.
