Our Sporting Life
|
The idea for a "Goldings" cup was borne out one day by a little bit of banter between two goldings old boys from totally different era's who were exchanging their views as to which generation were the most succsesful in their time at "Goldings" at sport. As neither would concede which one of them would be considered "The second eleven" the ineviteble outcome was "How many cups did your lot win then?" So out of this sporting exchange developed the idea to re-kindle a cup which would remind sports men and women in Hertfordshire how good we were! A few telephone calls, a little bit of badgering, and a lot of help from Herts S.F.A. with very strong support from David Willacy (Herts Official) the "Goldings Memorial Football Cup" became accepted as the official cup for the annual final of the under 14's football trophy for Hertfordshire. You may ask why under 14's, well we felt this age was the time at Goldings that we really became proud that we were an important part of "The William Baker Technical School" with all the fine work it carried out, under the umbrella of Barnardo's by such dedicated staff. The work on the cup is now complete, but other ideas are abound which will remind people that Goldings was another success story that Barnardo's can be very proud of. A project we intend to complete one day is to honour the Goldings lads that served Wimbledon so well from 1946-67 as first choice "Ball Boys". As Mr Wheatley once said in our school magazine "Perhaps one day we may have a Goldings lad playing at Wimbledon" well perhaps we may just get round that one...it's on the drawing board. Goldings 1922-67. If you have time please visit our Website or perhaps if you are a Goldings Boy you may want to rekindle past friendships you once shared at Goldings, and attend our annual reunion the details are also on the Website www.goldings.org
This is the proposed write up as requested by Barnardos for publication in the Guild Messenger
